CLASSIFICATION

A battery is a collection of cells (Duracell 9v). Cells are typically cylindrical in shape. A single cell “battery” (CR123A) is considered a cell. The CR123A meets the criterion not to exceed 1g lithium metal content.

PACKAGING INFORMATION
Citation: IATA DGR, PI 968 – General Requirements
Packaging for cells must also meet the requirements of IATA DGR PI 968, section IB:
The equipment must be packed in strong outer packagings;
Packagings must also meet the additional requirements:
- Cells an batteries must be packed in inner packagings that completely enclose the cell or battery.
- They must not be packed in the same other packagings with dangerous goods classified in Class 1 other that division 1.4S.
- Each package must be capable of withstanding a 1.2 m drop tests in any orientation without: damage to the cells or batteries, shifting of the contents so as to allow battery to battery contact, release of contents.
- Each package containing cells or batteries must not be placed in an overpack with packages with dangerous goods classified in Class 1 other that division 1.4S.
- Packages must be marked with the lithium battery mark, hazard label and Cargo Aircraft Only.
- Each package must be marked with the proper shipping name, and the corresponding UN number, the full name and address of the shipper and the consignee an located in the same surface near the proper shipping name ??????
SHIPPING PAPER REQUIREMENTS
A Shipper’s declaration for Dangerous Goods declaration is required and the air waybill, when used, must include the words “Lithium metal batteries, in compliance with Section II of PI 968
CARTON MARKING
In the current application, the package must bear the lithium battery mark.

OVERPACKS
If a package must display the lithium metal battery contained in equipment mark, then an overpack must also display that mark.
