CLASSIFICATION

Lithium cells and batteries must meet requirements of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria. The manufacture must record the test results and maintain them (indefinitely).

This transport data sheet uses the small lithium metal cells and batteries exceptions in 49 CFR 173.185(c). The criteria is:

• the lithium content may not exceed 1 g for a lithium metal cell or 2 g for a lithium metal battery. The CR123A meets the criterion not to exceed 1g lithium metal content

PACKAGING INFORMATION

Lithium cells or batteries packed with, or contained in, equipment, must be packaged in a manner to prevent:

i) short circuits; ii) Damage caused by shifting or placement with the package; and iii)Accidental activation of the equipment.

Specification packaging does not apply but the equipment must offer equivalent protection as if it was a rigid package.

There is no gross weight limit for the cells or batteries contained in equipment.

SHIPPING PAPER REQUIREMENTS

Normal documentation requirements are waived when transported by road. Equipment containing lithium cells or batteries is still hazmat, but are not marked “HM” on the shipping document because they are not subject to documentation requirements in 49 CFR 173 Subpart C.

CARTON MARKING

There are no hazardous materials marking or labeling requirements when a package contains no more than four lithium metal cells or two lithium metal batteries contained in equipment where there are not more than two packages in the consignment. The company logo can appear on the box for marketing purposes.

ONLY, if the package contains more that than four lithium metal cells or two lithium metal batteries, the lithium metal battery mark that show they are contained in equipment must be displayed.

OVERPACKS

There are no hazardous materials marking or labeling requirements for overpacks of packages of equipment containing lithium metal cells or batteries when shipped according with this transport data sheet.

If the some of the packages contain more that than four lithium metal cells or two lithium metal batteries and display the lithium metal battery contained in equipment mark then the overpack must also display that mark.
